Home Sweet Home for PlayStation 4 Reviews

Unlike other titles, however, Home Sweet Home manages to add enough to the mode to make it something that all PSVR owners should try out. Though it has its issues, the eerie atmosphere, incredible sound design, and surprisingly unique theme of the game make it one of the better horror experiences that I’ve had on the PSVR. If you’re into atmospheric horror and looking for something to scare you this month, then this is definitely worth a try. I played both versions, and I can say that, even though the graphics take a hit, virtual reality is the better mode for Home Sweet Home.

Resident Evil 4 set benchmarks back in 2005 on the Gamecube, but with the 2023 remake coming soon, we've pitted both of them head to head for a graphics comparison.

Home Sweet Home Review Summary

The first big scare in Home Sweet Home also sets the stage for its first big frustration. Before you even realize what’s happening, the game expects you to spin around, run into another room, realize you can hide in lockers, then hide in said locker, all within seconds. If you don’t do it it right, you die immediately, then have to reload and watch the setup again.

Home Sweet Home Alone takes its sweet time, filling its first hour with an endless round of "Oh it's him from SNL / that HBO sitcom," as we meet multiple families and multiple kids who absolutely do not matter at all. • Challenging Gameplay – Focus on stealth gameplay which requires player’s skill to overcome. Progression is occasionally gated off by some insidious puzzles. A few of the puzzles are extremely clever, requiring the player to search the environment for clues and then perform some mental gymnastics to come up with the solutions. Most, however, simply require the player to acquire a nearby object to interact with an environmental barrier (including one game of “find the keys” in Tim’s house that had me ripping my hair out). This is frankly an awful way to start the game, but players should push through this sequence.

This includes your path, the problem of the moment, and of course your tools to deal with the threat. This is not an impressive game from a visual fidelity or content volume standpoint, but where it does excel is its sound design. Despite doing a bunch of things right, Home Sweet Home is certainly not without issues. Elsewhere, the game does a poor job of guiding the player, so expect to be stuck in the same room looking for clues or figuring out how to get past an enemy for some time. Home Sweet Home does an excellent job of creating a solid foundation for fear, yet overly relies on cheap jump scares to carry the horror.

Maybe you’ll get it right away, but more than likely you won’t, and that sets the stage for a lot of the Home Sweet Home experience. It’s full of trial and error, mess up once and you’re reloading from the last checkpoint stealth or pseudo-action sequences. And being such a dark and murky game, sometimes you’ll just bumble into a reload situation because it’s hard to see what you’re even supposed to do. When it comes to the world of VR, the number one key to any title is the immersion factor, and Home Sweet Home actually manages to accomplish that thanks to its incredible sound design. Not only is sound so important for a virtual reality game, it’s probably the most important factor in any horror experience. You need things like ambient noises, growls, or simple things like footsteps and silence to feel a certain way in order to draw you in for when the big scares occur.

Though the plot — which shouldn’t take more than six or so hours — might be lost on some people who don’t choose to explore, Home Sweet Home actually offers a surprisingly deep amount of backstory. The game takes the time to explain the lore that comes into play through environmental storytelling. Of particular interest and importance is the legend of the haunting “Preta”, a restless and vengeful spirit that is forever hungry and thirsty. The entire game is steeped in Thai imagery, from the newspaper clippings to the graffiti on the walls, and the unique setting adds to the sense of displacement and disorientation for western players. Home Sweet Home is a great PSVR game and a good regular title. The mystery surrounding the story and unique set pieces mix incredibly well with superb horror elements.

At the same time, he’ll find himself being hunted by malevolent spirits and beings. To be fair, the game's controls work well for the most part. And micromanaging team members can be enjoyable when time is of the essence, which it oftentimes is -- you'll have a pre-set number of days to finish the job and the clock is always ticking. In this way, the game reminds me of the Wii title Order Up! You may be asking… surely I have some way of defending myself from the games threats? The answer to that is no, all you have to make your way through is game is a flashlight, bringing a more intense feeling to the game.

The sound effects are ear piercing and true to life – as far as horror is concerned. The sound adds a great deal to the scary scenes in this game, not that the visuals aren’t scary, but the sound tops it all. Screams, cries and moans all play a part here to alert the player, or to give the player the sheer creeps. As with most horrors, an onslaught of puzzles come into play and direct you to find the right items, or toggle scenes to new areas.

You have no guarantee the way you came will be as you remember it, and where will you hide? This initial dose of blind panic and unease is a masterful way of handling a very simple, very primal instinct. After a few obstacles are overcome, you head into a room, where a woman stands with her back to you. You try reaching out to her, and her head, just her head, turns 180 degrees and screams in a violent rage. With the game finally getting an EU release on PS4, we bring you our Home Sweet Home review.

Once you persevere and figure out what you need to do to survive, that knowledge will carry you through most of the rest of the game. Well before the player is familiar with the mechanics at play, they are asked to endure what is arguably the most difficult sequence in the game. The first encounter with a spirit in Home Sweet Home will likely lead to many players experiencing repeated deaths, over and over again, until they finally figure out the correct steps to take to survive. There were moments in Home Sweet Home, the Yggdrazil Group’s horror title that was recently ported to the PlayStation VR, that frightened me so badly that I actually had to take off my headgear to collect myself.

This simple Thai folklore-inspired first-person horror begins by leading you around several logic-defying corridors, twisting and turning and repeating in ever-more disorientating ways. Home Sweet Home tells the twisted tale of Tim, a man still coping with the loss of his wife who wakes up one day to find himself the aforementioned nightmare situation. He must escape this hellish labyrinth and uncover the reason for being in it in the first place. There are many games that support seated play if you wanted to play games with M&KB. One of the best aspects of the game is how fully immersive it is. With every step, I was completely engaged with my character.

Review: Home Sweet Home – PS4/PSVR

If barred from moving forward, it is sometimes a good idea to simply turn around, as a door that wasn’t present before may have mystically appeared. There are also a couple of nifty storytelling sequences that take place as Tim wanders his home repeatedly, and the rooms subtly change each time he enters them, denoting the passage of time and his mental deterioration. The opening sequence of Home Sweet Home is one of the most frightening in the game. I don’t want to spoil any story surprises, but I will say that Home Sweet Home throws Tim into the deep end of the pool without first teaching him how to swim. The interesting thing about Home Sweet Home is that, as a game, it coasts by with a minimum level of competency. There are all sorts of problems with the mechanics in Home Sweet Home that prevent it from being a classic.
