Home Sweet Home Review PS VR PlayStation Universe

The first big scare in Home Sweet Home also sets the stage for its first big frustration. Before you even realize what’s happening, the game expects you to spin around, run into another room, realize you can hide in lockers, then hide in said locker, all within seconds. If you don’t do it it right, you die immediately, then have to reload and watch the setup again.

It should also be noted that though it is being promoted and sold as a PS VR game, Home Sweet Home can be played perfectly well outside of VR. And the first antagonist that player encounters in that frustrating opening is a classic horror villain for the ages, right up there with terrifying film villains like Sadaku from Ringu and Kayaku from Ju-On. This is a creation that is horrifying in its relentless pursuit of Tim, and its lamenting moans are utterly bone chilling.

Home Sweet Home Review – House of Horrors (PS4/PSVR)

Home Sweet Home is here to show us that horror is still alive, or dead, or a humongous black monster wanting to slap the life out of you. I bought the game today hoping that I would be able to play with my Oculus Rift, however I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it. I start steamvr and everything and once I open the game it is just a black screen in the headset with the game playing in desktop mode. The core gameplay focuses on storytelling and stealth to avoid perilous spirits hunting you.

In this time when you have died multiple times, you start to become a bit distanced from the atmosphere and scares. This will make it hard for many to be motivated to playthrough the game for the second time. When it comes to this genre I don’t think it is a good idea to divulge too much of the game’s story, so lets just outline the idea of the story. Your wife Jane is missing and after drinking yourself into a drunken stupor you wake up in an unknown building. It’s now your job to find your way home and find out what happened to Jane on the way… but you soon realise you are not alone and this is not a good thing. One thing I really like about Home Sweet Home is it is based on the mythology of Thailand, and this really helps the game play out in the Asian horror mould.

Games in the genre have often suffered from either poor visuals, bad story-telling or have been down-right glitch ridden. Vrgamecritic is the #1 portal dedicated to virtual reality game reviews, providing a de facto rating for VR games. We collate media reviews from hundreds of sites and do our best to offer gamers a great place to find their next experiences. I don’t mind challenging situations, but when you have such a slim margin of error, having to repeat sections of a game over and over that are meant to be emotionally affecting has a desensitizing effect with every retry. To make a comparison,Home Sweet Home reminds me ofAlien Isolation somewhat, but a much more truncated version that highlights its issues more as the player doesn’t get room to breathe and get absorbed into the fiction. Now, the gameplay is where the first and main frustration with the game comes into fruition.

Given you only have the flashlight and the stealth mechanic, the game comes down to trial and error. Which can soon become very frustrating due to the very small allowance for error. This starts straight at the beginning of the game, as with no real explanation on what you are actually meant to be doing, they expect you to know you need to run and hide in a locker. This results in a number of deaths as you try to figure just part out, and of course the restarting of that part and watching the set-piece again. While the moment to moment gameplay of Home Sweet Home might feel clumsy and barebones at times, the scares in this game cannot be denied.

It was to the point where I played a good portion of the game in TV mode due to the visual dip in VR. There are several reasons why Home Sweet Home is lacking in the gameplay department, but the bottom line is that as an experience, Home Sweet Home is extremely scary and unsettling. At one point, after I had been running and hiding a bit too strenuously, the first-person viewpoint suddenly turned on me and I started feeling a bit nauseous.

The movie features mock commercials during its introduction to create the sensation of channel surfing during the middle of the night when you just happen to stumble upon this delirious midnight madness. Begos shot the movie on 16mm where the film grain and bleeding colors only enhance the experience. Steve Moore’s score is equally effective and punctuates every grisly set piece.

You can have a decent experience without it, but expect some of the problems to be more pronounced. Both modes still suffer from shoddy A.I., and it’s important enough to single out again. At times, it’s never clear on what and how far certain creatures can detect you. The space you have to approach them from behind fluctuates, and some won’t even be able to see you through objects with holes in them. While it gave me a nice angle of being just within eye line of them, it did ruin the feeling of dread a few times.

Home Sweet Home Review Summary

Thankfully, Home Sweet Home has no problem with this, as the sound in the game is likely its best facet. Home Sweet Home is a first-person horror adventure game based on Thai myths and beliefs. After his wife’s disappearance, Tim awakens to find himself in a strange, dilapidated building instead of the comfort of his home.

Maybe you’ll get it right away, but more than likely you won’t, and that sets the stage for a lot of the Home Sweet Home experience. It’s full of trial and error, mess up once and you’re reloading from the last checkpoint stealth or pseudo-action sequences. And being such a dark and murky game, sometimes you’ll just bumble into a reload situation because it’s hard to see what you’re even supposed to do. When it comes to the world of VR, the number one key to any title is the immersion factor, and Home Sweet Home actually manages to accomplish that thanks to its incredible sound design. Not only is sound so important for a virtual reality game, it’s probably the most important factor in any horror experience. You need things like ambient noises, growls, or simple things like footsteps and silence to feel a certain way in order to draw you in for when the big scares occur.

Games

As you progress in this game you will attempt to uncover this secret as well as solve the mystery of your wife’s disappearance while in constant fear of being discovered by these unforgiving creatures. Home Sweet Home is a first-person indie-horror game inspired by Thai myths and beliefs that was recently released on PS4 and Xbox One from Thai developer Yggdrazil. Yggdrazil is not known for game creation, as it boasts projects in VFX, Animation, Art Design and Online-Editing categories, with very little focus on games. For a company with such a diverse portfolio, it would be an understatement to say I was surprised with the overall quality of Home Sweet Home.

Again, I cannot stress enough how good of a balance there is between challenging puzzles, stealth gameplay and culturally-accurate horror in Home Sweet Home. That combination truly is what made this game enjoyable for me. Combine that trifecta with the realistic, immersive and horrifying graphics and scenes that unfold before your eyes and you have yourself a horror gaming experience that you won’t soon forget.
